10 Reasons Why You Should Sign Up For An Adventure Race.

A friend of mine sent me an email about a race called Tough Mudder. I was intrigued. It was a 10+ mile race with over 20 physical obstacles. I love any chance to channel my inner badass  – so I was an easy sell. The race was not timed and the organizers strongly encouraged team entries. I liked the fact that camaraderie was encouraged and it wasn’t about individual medals or personal bests. The goal was to finish and ideally, finish as a team.  I recruited a Tough Mudder team ( “That’s What She Said” ) and signed us up for the Tough Mudder event at Mount Snow in my  home state of Vermont.

Competing in my first adventure race was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. I was pushed physically and mentally beyond my limits and it was awesome.  Adventure races are incredibly empowering for women and I think every woman should consider signing up for, training for, and participating in an adventure race. Why in world should you do this? Here are my top 10 reasons:

Happy New Year! – How to Kick Ass in Three Steps

We are raised to believe that a New Year brings new beginnings – a rebirth of sorts. A New Year provides us with a chance to make new goals for our lives, forge new paths, and reinvent ourselves. A New Year can be very inspiring but we should be aware of the pitfalls surrounding even the most well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions.  I don’t want to rain on anyone’s New Year’s resolution parade, but I don’t believe in them – at least not the large, lofty, generic types of New Year’s resolutions. Here’s the major pitfall: an unfulfilled resolution often results in feelings of failure and defeat. We’ve all been there: if we can’t stick with our resolution, if we lose our footing and lose our way, we suffer feelings of defeat and often we give up until next year. While this may sound extreme and dramatic, it is a very real side effect of a culture that places so much emphasis on making big life changes once a year.

In a country that is mired by rising obesity rates, one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose

So You Want To Quit Your Job and Start Over? Ok. Just Do It – I did.

How to Quit Your Job and Follow Your Dreams

‘Enough to make me scream’

I’ve always played by the rules and I’ve always played it safe. I’m one of those people that hates uncertainty and I get really nervous when I’m not in control. I have issues, you say? You bet! But maybe this sounds like you too…
Growing up I always tried to do the right thing and put myself in a position to go far in school and land a good job. I graduated from college with a degree in political science with my sites set on graduate school. I was going to get a PhD in political science or a law degree.  Graduate school would provide years of structure and then I would have a “real” professional degree that would lead to a “real” job – complete with success, happiness and a cherry on top. It seemed like a solid plan to me. The only problem was that I didn’t want to become a lawyer, or professor, or Washington politico… I wanted to become a fitness instructor.  Of course this epiphany came after I had earned a masters degree in political science and landed a great job with …

I Can’t Get Motivated. What’s Wrong With Me?

Finding the motivation to begin your new life can be difficult at the very least.  If you find yourself in a space where you just can’t get motivated to make some changes in your lifestyle A) you are not alone; and B) nothing is wrong with you.  Rest assured, embarking on this journey will be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do, but also one of the most rewarding thing you can do for yourself.

Remember that getting fit and eating healthy is a mindset and a lifestyle choice. You must make this decision consciously and fully informed. Further, you should want to change your behavior. If you don’t really want to, then you just might not be ready – and that’s okay – I will be here waiting for you when you are ready.  Don’t beat yourself up over it because we’ve all been there and we’ve all started something and then just didn’t follow though. The Journal of the American Board of Sport Psychology reports that 50% of people that join fitness clubs drop out within six months. It’s fairly easy to deduce the reasons (or excuses) …

Hot Topic: Can I Be Fit With Fat?

There’s a lot of chatter out in the blogosphere, television programs, and health and fitness magazines over whether or not you can be both fat and fit. Are the two mutually exclusive? Recently Dr. Drew featured a segment on his HLN prime time program “Is it ok to be fat?”. His segment featured women from the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), a civil rights organization dedicated to ending what they term “size discrimination.” Their argument boils down to this: self-acceptance of one’s body size is more important than weight loss, so, society needs to be more accepting of overweight and obese individuals. Many in the movement affirm that a person can be overweight and still be healthy and physically fit.

Health advocates leading the fight against climbing obesity rates argue something different: to be overweight and/or obese is not healthy at all, therefore, weight loss needs to become a priority, not simply accepting one’s size.

So who’s right? Can you really have your cake and eat it too? Is it that black and white? The Centers for Disease Control state that during the past 20 years, there has …
